Dean Young remembers the day he put the last roof on the Old Eagle School in Strafford. “We did it in July of 1987 – July 10. It was 90 degrees,” he said.
Young works for the Ed Callahan Company of Devon. They are putting the new roof on the historic schoolhouse just as they did 24 years ago. Young was a young roofer at the time and before they put on the new shingles he wrote a note and left it there. That is how he could remember the day and weather conditions.
The school was erected in 1788 by German pioneers next to their graveyard. It was restored in 1895. One hundred years later residents fought the Tredyffrin school district for control of the building. The residents won and control was turned over to local trustees.
